The type of people that can benefit from pain management include patients with nerve related pain, such as shingles, sciatica, reflex sympathetic dystrophy and diabetic neuropathy. Patients suffering from low back pain and neck pain associated with disc disease or injury, post-surgical pain and pain from muscular back problems may also benefit from of our procedures.

Pain management has become a distinct field of medicine, with growing awareness and emphasis on these services. It has been recognized as a specialty for a number of years.

The patients that have severe pain and chronic pain often have a variety of needs that go beyond the medical treatment of their pain syndromes.

In many cases, we work together with surgeons, neurologists, physical therapists and psychiatrists/psychologists. The primary care physician often plays an important role.

Many times, chronic pain or severe pain can be coupled with other problems. Patients with chronic pain or severe pain often suffer from depression and anxiety related to their pain syndrome. This makes the pain much worse. In turn the pain makes the depression worse.

One common misconception is the equation of a pain management with pain medication.

We're not a narcotics dispensary.

We see ourselves as interventional pain managers. We work with procedures and medications to alter disease process, not just control symptoms.

Depending on the patient's condition, we may use one of any number of state-of-the-art interventional techniques to reduce the patient's pain.

Many patients present with multiple causes of pain. Often disc disease is accompanied with radicular problems and facet arthrosis. This can make it impossible to treat with only Epidurals. The other causes of pain must also be treated.

With the nerve pain Dr. Lee uses a neurostimulator to locate the specific nerves causing the pain. Once we locate the nerve, we can use a special probe to deaden the nerve and provide long-lasting relief. This procedure only targets the part of the nerve that channels pain. The other parts of the nerve that handle movement and coordination will function just fine.

Other types of injections utilize x-ray fluoroscopic guidance to pinpoint the area of pain. X-ray fluoroscopy is a special type of x-ray that gives real-time feedback on a TV monitor. This allows for monitoring of the probe and movement of the body.

Patients tend to develop some degree of tolerance to pain medication in overtime and it is necessary for them to escalate doses to maintain current pain levels.

We have many patients with chronic pain conditions whose life quality is improved with no problematic side effects. We work with the patient and their primary care physicians to implement the right amount of medication to improve their life quality.

Different patients have different goals in pain management.

For some patients, the goal is to restore function to allow the patient to engage in day-to-day activities. We cannot guarantee the patient will be pain-free, but they can still be productive and have a good quality of life. We deal with many injured workers and our goal with them is to restore function and return the patient to the work force. We want to help them lead a productive life again.
